SILENT HILL

I went to see Silent Hill this afternoon. It is based on the video game of the same name. The basic premise is that a couple's, Rose and Christopher, adoptive daughter (Sharon)is sick. The medicine they have been giving her is of no help. Sharon keeps sleep walking and saying the name Silent Hill. Silent Hill is a deserted town in Wyoming that is supposed to be haunted. Something bad happened at Silent Hill (isn't that always the way?).

Rose decides to take Sharon to find Silent Hill and get some answers. On the way there she crashes the car and when she wakes up Sharon is gone. Rose spends the rest of the movie following a mysterious young girl whom she never quite can catch. The entire town is deserted, covered in endless fog and there is ash falling from the sky. Along the way she does run into some people, some that are trying to help and others....not so much. There are some seriously fucked up creatures walking around this haunted town. Twisted zombie/mannequin type things, if you played the games you know what I am talking about.

Rose finds clues along the way in her search. Pointing her to her next destination. The school, the church, the hospital and a hotel. At various points an air raid/siren/horn goes off and then things get really fucking weird. Everything goes to darkness, everything changes and the big guy comes out. The big guy dragging his giant sword/knife.

The acting was not so great but where this movie really shines is the sets and the camera work. I really think you have had to played the games (or at least be familiar with them) to appreciate this aspect of it. The sets were spot on, looked exactly how they are pictured in the games. Everything looked great and they had all the same type locations from the game, an old school, hospital, hotel/apartment building etc. They even had scenes where Rose runs away from something or other and goes through this door then another. Rose even had a cell phone (in the game it was a transistor radio) that would blare static anytime one of the creatures would come near. I swear it was perfect. They also made good use of the spooky camera angels used in the games. Lots of high third person shots as Rose walked down an alley and around the corner. They did a bang up job with this part of the movie.

Over all I had a good time with this movie. The end was excellently gory. Lots of razor wire and fire involved. I kept thinking to myself as I watched Rose progress from section to section getting out of one scrape after another "Don't forget to save". I was looking for the red squares on the walls that were save places in the video games (didn't see any, maybe she was playing on the extreme difficulty setting).

So I went to CVS this morning to purchase so cold medicine. I caught a spring flu/cold or something and it is kicking my ass! Spring colds are the worst aren't they? Anyway, I picked up the CVS brand dayquil and a bottle of Alleve. They needed to take down my info before they would sell me the cold meds. Apparently dayquil and the like are used to make meth.
